    Van Stiefel, whose birth in 1965 in Atlanta, GA, marked the beginning of a journey that would significantly influence the guitar landscape, has an impressive career marked by an inventive fusion of musical styles, techniques, improvisation, electric guitar, and cutting-edge technologies. Residing in Avondale, PA, his roles as a composer, guitarist, producer, and writer have culminated in the creation of more than fifty notable works, earning him a distinct spot in the tapestry of contemporary music.

     

    Early Life and Education

     

    Enthralled by the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour at just three years old, his passion was fueled when his parents gifted him a ukulele to strum along with the show. By six, he was learning guitar from his father, an experience that laid the foundation for his musical journey. His classical music exposure burgeoned through his involvement with the Atlanta Boy Choir, which took him on tours across England, Italy, and the US. His classical guitar training was furthered at Maple Street Guitars in Atlanta. He pursued higher education at Yale College, earning the Cox Prize for Music Composition, followed by a Masters in Guitar Performance from the Yale School of Music. His academic pursuits also led him to the Banff Centre in Alberta, where he was honored as the Andre Segovia Memorial Fellow.

     

    Career and Contributions

     

    With a Ph.D. in music composition from Princeton University under his belt, he delved into crafting chamber music that intricately blends the electric guitar with diverse instruments and synthesized sounds. A founding member of the experimental Sap Dream Quartet, his group performed at prestigious events like the New York Guitar Festival and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. He released multiple albums through New Focus Recordings and has works featured on the Mode and Innova labels. His innovative compositions, widely played by leading guitarists, are published by Da Vinci Publishing.

     

    Van’s signature work is characterized by the harmonious fusion of music with technological advancements. A self-taught programmer, he developed interactive pieces for laptop ensembles, incorporating electric guitars. His collaborations include working with the Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) and presenting at various symposiums and events like the TedX Phoenixville. His ventured beyond the guitar, experimenting with turntables, sound design, digital production, and spoken word in a relentless pursuit of pushing artistic boundaries, described by critic Bob Duggan of BigThink as creating experiences that are "beyond space and time, deceiving in its simplicity."
