    Van Stiefel's entry into the world in 1965 in Atlanta, GA, marked the beginning of a journey that would significantly reshape the guitar music landscape. With a distinctive blend of improvisational genius, electric guitar mastery, and pioneering use of interactive technologies, he has established himself as a leading figure in composing, guitar performance, production, and authorship. Now based in Avondale, PA, his rich portfolio boasts over fifty compositions, each underscoring his transformative impact on modern musical narratives.

     

    His musical odyssey was sparked in his formative years, nurtured by the captivating tunes of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. This early exposure motivated his parents to gift him a ukulele, laying the foundation for a lifelong musical exploration. At six, he began his formal musical education under his father's guidance, embarking on a journey with the guitar that would eventually define his career. His participation in the Atlanta Boy Choir further enriched his musical experience, introducing him to classical music and leading to performances in esteemed venues across England, Italy, and the United States. His dedication to classical guitar was further honed at Maple Street Guitars in Atlanta, leading to significant academic recognition at Yale College, where he received the Cox Prize for Music Composition. His academic achievements continued with a Masters in Guitar Performance from the Yale School of Music and a Certificate in Advanced Musical Studies from the Banff Centre, where he was honored as the Andre Segovia Memorial Fellow.

     

    Upon completing his Ph.D. in music composition from Princeton University, Stiefel embarked on a path of musical innovation, focusing on chamber music compositions that intricately blend the electric guitar with various instruments and computer-generated sounds. His creation of the Sap Dream Quartet was a pivotal move in his career, emphasizing his dedication to expanding the electric guitar's role in contemporary music. His discography, featuring works released by New Focus Recordings and contributions to the Mode and Innova labels, showcases his broad and dynamic range as a composer. His scores, which have received international acclaim, reflect his significant influence on the global music scene and are published by Da Vinci Publishing.
